E. Pentenrieder was born
in Arblingen, near Munich in Bavaria, Germany. He came to San Antonio in
1852. He was in the mercantile business and was one of the leading merchants.
In the 1860's, Pentenrieder had a partnership with Mr. Blersch. They owned a general merchandise business that carried "fancy goods", musical instrument, perfumes, and toys. The business was located on the the southeast corner of Commerce and Main Plaza on the site occupied by the Dauenhauer Building in which the artist Grenet had a studio.
He also served as Alderman under Mayor Thielepape from November 8, 1867, until March 28, 1870, and under Mayor Newton from March 13, 1872, until November 12, 1872. On July 18, 1873, Pentenrieder and Co. Mercantile Store was still on Main St. (W. Commerce St.).
Pentenrieder was a long-time sufferer of tuberculosis. With failing health, he abondoned the business. On September 21, 1873, he and his wife returned from an extended tour of Europe.
He was one of the founders of S.A. Turner Association and was one of the organizers of Hook and Ladder Co..
He purchased his home from the Guenther family, located on Washington Street, north of the Guenther's Upper Mill, built in 1868. Penternrieder died in San Antnonio in 1875. Guenther named his son Erhard in honor of Pentenrieder. He died of a hemorrhage at the residence of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Eule, on Military Plaza. In the funeral procession were the Turn Verein and Turner Bands, playing alternately, to the burial plot in City Cemetery #1on the west side near the center.
