Gustave Schleicher

Gustav Schleicher was born in Darmstadt, Germany on November 19, 1823.  He studied engineering and architecture at the University of Giessen. When he received his degrees, he helped build several European railroads. Later, in 1847, he helped found the settlement on the Llano River which ultimately failed. This discouraged him, so he moved to San Antonio soon after.

During his time in San Antonio, he served as a Bexar County land surveyor, Senator, House Representative, and Engineering Corps. of Confederate Army. After the Civil War, he practiced law and supervised the building of railroad tracks all around Texas. He served as a Texas Representative in United States Congress.

Gustav Schleicher was mainly known for his political smarts, education, and colorful use of language. He died on January 10, 1879. In 1887, Schleicher County, Texas was named im memory of him.
