James Wahrenburger

James Wahrenburger was born in August 9, 1855 in Austin, Texas. He was born to John and Caroline Klein Wahrenburger, natives of Switzerland. At the age of fourteen, he was sent to Philadelphia and spent two years at West Pennsylvania Academy. After that he spent six years in foreign study and travel. Following his return, he spent five years at home in Austin, during which time he was entrusted with much professional work, both public and private. He and his parents moved to San Antonio in 1882.

He was one of the most successful architects in San Antonio. He started his own business in 1883 with Albert Beckmann, who asked to become partners with him. They built Dr. Kalteyer’s Drug Store, the City County Hospital on San Fernando Hill, and the Joske’s department Store together. They ended their partnership in 1891. He died in 1892.
