RULES:

Length and Time requirements:

First year, minimum 16 lines or one minute; maximum 24 lines or two minutes.  Second year, minimum 20 lines or 1 1/2 minutes, maximum 32 lines or 2 1/2 minutes.  Third/Fourth levels, Minimum 24 lines or 2 minutes, maximum, 46 lines or three minutes.

Rules for the presentations are:

Three entries per level per school. Poetry Reading is judged on the basis of reading and not on any interpretation by the contestant, other than the use of voice changes, eye contact, facial gestures and some use of hands. No props or costumes may be used. The contestant may not walk around. Poems may be edited to fit time or line limits.  Poetry/prose memory selections may not be used as poetry/prose reading selections or vice versa by the same person.

The selection must be from a German-speaking author, i.e., published in German originally. It may not be a translation from a non-German speaking author, although it may have been published. But it may be from a non German who writes German, ie,
Kishon.

At least two copies of the selection must be presented to the judges at the contest. The name of the selection with the name of the author must be listed in the entry form with the name of the person performing it. 

 

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING:

1.       SELECTION and PREPARATION:The selection was sufficiently prepared. It possesses interest and literary value.(0-20 pts)

 

 

2   INSIGHT AND UNDERSTANDING The speaker is able to reflect the mood and  the 

     meaning of the selection.((0-20)

 

 

3.      CONTROL OF FORM and VOICE AND DICTION: Enunciation is distinct without being  pedantic. The voice was clear and the speaker avoids monotone :The contestant maintains a balance between thought and rhythm; i.e. grouping, pauses, etc.are handled meaningfully.(20 pts)

 

 

4.      BODILY MOVEMENTS: The speaker was poised and avoided distracting and unmotivated movements. (0-20 pts)

 

 

5.   PRONUNCIATION: The speaker's pronunciation of the German language  was clearly correct? The intonation and syntax was German.(0-20 pts)
