RULES

Length and Time requirements:

First year, minimum 16 lines or one minute; maximum 24 lines or two minutes.
Second year, minimum 20 lines or 1 1/2 minutes, maximum 32 lines or 2 1/2 minutes.
Third/Fourth/Advantaged levels
, Minimum 24 lines or 2 minutes, maximum, 46 lines or three minutes.

Rules for the presentations are:

Three entries per level per school. Poems may be edited to fit time or line limits.

Poetry/prose memory selections may not be used as poetry/prose reading selections or vice versa by the same person.

The selection must be from a German-speaking author, i.e., published in German originally. It may not be a translation from a non-German speaking author, although it may be published. But it may be from a non German who is published in  German, ie, Kishon.

At least two copies of the selection must be presented to the judges at the contest. The name of the selection with the name of the author must be listed in the entry form with the name of the person performing it.

Poetry memory is dramatic interpretation (monologues), but without costumes and props. The contestant may use one chair and may move during the presentation.

 

1.       SELECTION and PREPARATION: It possesses interest and literary value.

     The selection was sufficiently prepared .(0-20 pts)

 

 

2.      INSIGHT AND UNDERSTANDING: The speaker reflects the mood and the 

    meaning of the selection. (0-20 pts)

 

 

3.      VOICE AND DICTION: Enunciation is distinct without being pedantic. The

      voice is clear.  Does the speaker avoid monotone? (0-20 pts)

 

 

4.      PRONOUNCIATION: Speaker's pronunciation is correct and understandable. (0-20 pts)

 

 

5.      CONTROL OF FORM: Speaker maintains a balance between thought and rhythm.  Grouping, pauses, etc, are handled meaningfully. (0-10 pts

 

 

6.      BODILY MOVEMENTS: The speaker was poised.  Speaker avoids

    distracting movement, but used movement to interpret. (0-10 pts)
