RULES:

There may be one play per school. Time Limit:  Minimum: 15 minutes and Maximum 20 minutes.
Two copies of the script must be provided for the judges. There must be a MINIMUM OF THREE speaking characters, no maximum.

If advantaged speakers are included in a play cast, this information must be given to the judges. Plays with five or more characters will be given greater consideration in judging.

Plays must be from published works originally written in the German language. A play may be adapted to fit the time limit but it must be a published work by a recognized German-speaking author and it may NOT be adapted from a fairy tale.

It may be any 15-20 minute segment from a play, radio drama, cabaret play, or any other published dramatic work.  Suggested authors: Brecht, Tucholsky, Durrenmatt, Borchert , Goethe, Schiller,etc.

 

It may NOT be a German translation of a play, but rather the original must have been written in German.  Drama and Comedy are of equal value.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING:

1.      GERMAN PRONUNCIATION: Actors speak German correctly. (0-20 pts)

 

2.  SELECTION and PREPARATION:  Performers know it well. Interesting and sufficiently  difficult for the performers; and meets all guidelines listed here. (0-20 pts)

 

3.      VOICE AND DICTION:  The actors enunciate, their voices are clear and  audible.  Volume, rate, pitch, and inflection are used well. (0-20 pts)

 

4.      BLOCKING AND MOVEMENT and CHARACTERIZATION: The actors clearly and accurately develop their characters. The blocking is adequate and motivated?  Are the actors poised?  Do they avoid unnecessary movements? (0-20 pts)

 

5.      OVERALL EFFECT: The contestants set and maintain a mood. They maintain character and 

      pace.  The stage sets, properties, costumes and/or make-up enhance and don't distract. The 

      performance leaves a lasting impression? (0-20pts)
