TEXAS STATE GERMAN CONTESTS, INC

INSTRUCTIONS TO JUDGES FOR

ALL TIMED EVENTS

Plays, Skits, Puppet Theater, Duets, Vocal Ensembles, Polka Bands, Classical Instrumental Ensemble, Group Folk Dance

MOST important note to judges of all events

At Sprachfest/ Houstonfest/ Winterfest be sure that each school has only the number listed in the category you are judging . Allowable number is on the critique sheet.

If you are judging at STATE check that  no one enters other than those listed as having qualified in this category. No substitutes are allowed.

If you have any questions about the level of the competitors, about whether they are advantaged speakers, whether their entry is the proper length, about the instructions given, or about any aspects of the contest, please send to the Tab Room for help.

Please do not make any decisions, i.e., disqualifying a student or a group without first consulting with the Directors of the contest. Thank you for your assistance.

Each entry must perform at the time indicated on the schedule or be eliminated from competition.  Changes in times(order) may be changed upon judge's approval.  Judges wait in the room until all designated contestants have performed. If the contestant goes over the time limit by 30 seconds or more, he/she may be disqualified, depending upon the circumstances.

There are, in most cases minimum times and/or number of lines to be considered.

The contestants are asked to bring at least TWO copies of their entry.  If they do not give you a copy, then they are to be disqualified at once.  Fill in the information on the critique sheets.

Be sure to also write down the: Name of the student, school, title, author, etc. on the Awards' sheet.

As you listen to him/her, please evaluate the performance according to the rules and the criteria on the evaluation sheet. We appreciate any written comments that will help the students improve. In the judging of consider the literary quality/difficulty of the materials performed. Try not to let yourself be biased by your own personal taste, but rather on how well it fitted the personalities and abilities of the students. Also, judge heavily on the performance itself and how well the performer used the language. Did he/she/they communicate?  Was his/her/their performance effective?  If the answers to these questions are "yes" and if the performer kept within the rules stated, then he/she/they indeed deserve(s) a high ranking. In musical events consider the merit of the selections and the difficulty.  Please do not reveal your decision to the contestants. Don't make comments like, "I'm a terrible judge" or "I don't know what I am doing".  If you listen carefully and evaluate fairly, then you are rendering a valid decision.

Fill out the AWARD ASSEMBLY SHEET with the other judges.  Confer and determine your overall rating.  List them in the order which you determine to be the best, ie, first, second, third, fourth, up tenth place. Each one then receives team sweepstakes points for this rating. Please rank every performer through number ten.  Please write the names carefully on these ballots.

When you have finished, take the following to the TAB ROOM: 1) the critique sheets,2) the copies of student entries(put name of school on these, as they perform, and 3) the AWARDS SHEET.

Give all of this to the workers in the TAB ROOM.
