DUET ACTING
There may be one entry per school on each level.
This competition follows the basic rules of the National Forensic League, which include the following: The contestants (two in number) may use no more than two chairs, no other props; may only pantomime actions; must have a memorized introduction in German; may have no prompting; must use a piece from a published work by a German-speaking author (no translations); must have two copies of this piece for the judges; and must adhere to the time limits set forth above. The merit of the selection will be a criterion in judging.
Time
limits:
Level I, 3 to 5 minutes;
Level II, 4 to 6 minutes
Level III and IV, 7 to 10 minutes
PLAYS
Plays will be presented at the State Level only.
If there are three or more play entries, there will be an area contest.
There may be one play per school. Two copies of the script must be given to the judges. There must be a minimum of three speaking characters, no maximum.
If advantaged/native speakers are included in a play cast, this information must be given to the judges. Play with five or more characters will be given greater consideration by the judges. Drama and comedy are of equal value. Backdrops, props, make-up, costu,es are nice, but not mandatory.
Plays must be
published works originally written in the German language. A play may be adapted
to fit the time limit, but it must be a published work by a recognized German-speaking
author. It may not be adapted from a German Fairy Tale. It may be any 15-20
minute segment from a play; a radio drama, cabaret play or any other published
dramatic work. Suggested authors: Brecht, Tucholsky, Duerrenmatt, Borchert,
Goethe, Schiller, etc. It may not be a German translation of a play, but rather
the original must be written in German.
Time Limit:
Minimum, 15 minutes. Maximum, 20 minutes
There may be one puppet show per school from each of the following levels: Lower and Upper. The script must be from a published work. Fairy tales may be adapted as puppet shows. Two copies of the script must be provided for the judges.
The
performers must memorize all lines from the script. The judges will be asked
to check behind the stage for scripts. A stage will be provided for the show
on the contest site. Each group must provide its own: puppets, props, and backdrops
for its show. Back

Time
Limits:
Lower Level( 1st/2nd year): 4 minute minimum and 8 minute maximum
Upper Levels(3rd/4th/5th year): 7-minute minimum and 10 minute maximum.
SKITS
Each school may
have one skit entry per level: I, II, III, IV. If it is a mixed level skit,
then it must be entered on the higher level. If advantaged/native speakers are
included in a level III or IV skit, this information must be given to the judges.
Skits may be written by the class, the teacher, or German-speaking authors or
by others.
There must be a minimum of three speaking characters, no maximum. Skits
may be from Fairy tales. Good pronunciation and grammatically correct German
are most important in the judging. Costumes and props may be added for flavor.
