CHORUS
One entry per school. Singers must memorize music. It must be sung in German. The piece must be from a German-speaking composer and be a recognized work of music.It may be classical or folk. The maximum time limit is eight minutes; the minimum is five minutes. Groups may do medleys of songs, may use pantomime and choral reading to enhance their production. If a piano is not available at the contest site, tapes or CDs should be used. Or, the presentation may be a cappella or accompanied by a small instrument. Two copies of the music must be given to the judges. Members: Minimum, 4; Maximum, 12. Back to Top
Classical Instrumental Ensemble
One entry per
school. The piece must be from a German-speaking composer and be a recognized
work of music. For example: Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Haydn, Schubert,
Strauss, Mozart, Schumann, Mendelssohn and others. It must be classical. No
electric instruments, other than one electric keyboard, are allowed. No music
stands will be provided at the contest site.
The maximum time limit is ten minutes; the minimum is five minutes. There is
a 30-second grace period. Groups may do medleys of songs. Two copies of the
music must be given to the judges.

FOLK DANCE
One entry per
school.
Time limit for the performance: Minimum, 10 minutes Maximum, 15 minutes with
a 30-second grace period. Stopwatches are used. Dances must originate from German-speaking
countries. Each group must bring their own recorder or CD player and extension
cords. Three copies of the dance program must be given to the judges. Group
limit: Minimum, 6 students; No Maximum

POLKA BAND
One entry per school. No electric instruments are allowed. Maximum time of performance: 10 minutes. Minimum time: 5 minutes, with a 30-second grace period. Judging will be based on selections, total quality, musicianship of the group, appearance, showmanship, etc. All pieces of music must be from German-speaking composers. No music stands will be provided at the contest site. Two copies of the band program must be provided for the judges. Group limit: no more than 12 instruments and not less than 5, plus a conductor in a band. Back to Top

VOCAL SOLO
Two entries per school. The piece must be by a German-speaking composer, be a recognized work of music, sung in the German language and be memorized. The performance may be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 5 minutes in length. If there is no piano available at the contest site, the performer may use a cassette tape or a CD for accompaniment or sing a cappella. Two copies of the piece must be provided for the judges.
