Lauras Stern(Gute-Nacht-Geschichten (2004-2005)Children’s stories in 8-10 minute segments. 3 -4 stories on each DVD

Cost: About 9 Euros new and very cheap on EBAY.de(see url below) Great for vocabulary learned with a fun message. I personally love them. I first saw them when my God son showed a segment to his 3 year old son as a bed time story.

Laura's Star are magical stories based on the hugely popular books of Klaus Baumgart and it is about a 7 year old girl who has moved from the country to the city with her younger brother and parents.. The star is, of course, a magic star.I have 4 DVDs(total:13 stories). I purchased mine in Germany at Schlecher. Must have a code free DVD player. See information below.

Marx and Coca Cola (1991)  About East meeting West after the fall of the Wall.Film Arobics, Applause Learning  Resources
Terrific film about a young man from West Germany who goes to East Germany for some reason. (I didn't see it, but had someone explain it to me.) His car then breaks down in the East and he meets a young girl who is working out in a field running a tractor. I understand that it is really a wonderful story about two people who fall in love and come from two very different backgrounds. It is a good explanation of the differences between the East and the West. It is easy to understand. I only saw a portion of it, but thought that my first would get the gist of it and definitely the 2's would pick it up. My version has English subtitles, but that could be dealt with in a variety of ways. That's all that I know

Schulz Und Schulz (1992)  Twin brothers live in different worlds, east and west, find each other. Comedy.Brothers change places. Very interesting plot.   Film Arobics. Applause Learning  Resources

Bella Martha(Mostly Martha) (2002)  Amazon.de.  Hollywood Video/Blockbuster, Applause Learning  Resources

She lives for her work and presides with obsessive care over a spotless, precise kitchen. When her sister dies in a car accident, Martha has to care for Lina, her eight-year-old niece, a girl who proves as resolute and single-minded as her aunt. The orderly world of Martha's kitchen falls apart, and the owner brings in a flamboyant, fun-loving Italian sous chef (Sergio Castellitto) to help her deal with the pressure. The two cooks are instantly at odds. Yet as time goes by, with her whole world turned upside down and her personal space more crowded than she could ever imagine, Martha begins to find a new recipe for life.

Die Brücke (1959) Excellent movie to show now, about war. Academy award nominee. About the horrors of war. A group of German boys is ordered to protect a small bridge in their home village during the waning months of the second world war. Truckloads of defeated, cynical Wehrmacht soldiers flee the approaching American troops, but the boys, full of enthusiasm for the "blood and honor" Nazi ideology, stay to defend the useless bridge.

To get some advice from a professional criminal they visit a famous bank robber in jail (Til schweiger).

Rosenstrasse
(2004) purchased Hollywood video, Applause Learning  Resources.
Another tragic episode of the Holocaust is brought to light in Margarethe Von Trotta's ROSENSTRASSE. In 1943 Berlin, contrary to the laws that were written on paper, intermixed Jews were cruelly separated from their Aryan husbands and wives without warning, and were placed in a holding cell in the Rosenstrasse district. Von Trotta's film begins in modern-day New York City, at a funeral for the beloved husband of Ruth (Jutta Lampe) and father of Hannah (Maria Schrader). Ruth has always been haunted by her past; though she won't talk about it with her conflicted daughter. It's up to Hannah to travel to Berlin to track down the woman who saved her mother's life during WWII and uncover the truth once and for all. In 1943, Lena (Katja Riemann) was a beautiful pianist who was shunned by her father for falling in love with Fabian Israel Fischer (Martin Feifel). But when Fabian was arrested, she did whatever it took to free him. In the meantime, she took in Ruth (Svea Lohde), an eight-year-old whose mother had also been sequestered. As memories from the past begin to resurface in the present, Hannah starts to understand the bitterness that has tormented her mother for years. Von Trotta's sumptuously photographed, deftly woven film tenderly recounts another somber memory from the all-too-recent past.

Das Wunder von Bern (2003) an unforgettable film about a boy who loves soccer and a father who tries to understand.

Das Schreckliche Mädchen (1990)  Based on a true story. Hollywood Video, Film Arobics
Sonya is a German high school student who decides to write an essay about her town's history during the Third Reich and its resistance to it. To her dismay, and more so the town's, she uncovers instead definite collaboration during the period. As she digs deeper, she must struggle against the town's vocal and violent opposition to her search for the truth.

Die Bruecke(1959) Nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign film. Violence.A group of German boys is ordered to protect a small bridge in their home village during the waning months of the second world war. Truckloads of defeated, cynical Wehrmacht soldiers flee the approaching American troops, but the boys, full of enthusiasm for the "blood and honor" Nazi ideology, stay to defend the useless bridge.
The Bridge is one of the most-powerful antiwar films ever made. Based on an autobiographical novel by Manfred Gregor, it depicts seven Bavarian schoolboys who face death defending an insignificant bridge against an American attack in the last days of World War 2. The film first vividly pictures the home lives and personal problems of the boys. Then we see the boys joyfully discover they are being drafted into the Wehrmacht, after which they are assigned to defend a bridge at the edge of their town. Unknown to them, a colonel has given them this assignment because the bridge is strategically useless, planning to withdraw them before the Germans blow it up. But due to a mishap the boys are not withdrawn, and all but one die defending it. This film did not come easily to the screen. Many publishers rejected Manfred Gregor's book, several directors rejected the script, and the young actors in the film had little or no experience. Yet in the end The Bridge succeeded spectacularly. The director, Bernhard Wicki, was able to elicit harrowing performances from his cast, and the film received accolades from all over the World, including an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award in America. Wicki went on to new directing assignments, including the German sequence in The Longest Day, and several of the young actors found success in German theater and television. Directed by Bernhard Wicki; music by Hans-Martin Majewski; featuring Volker Bohnet, Fritz Wepper, Michael Hinz, and Cordula Trantow. West Germany, 1959, B&W, 102 minutes, German dialogue, English subtitles.

Goodbye, Lenin (2003)- some nudity(two places), Super film about the old East Germany and the problems of change. When his mother, a steadfast Communist, has a heart attack and falls into a coma while watching him being arrested during a protest in Berlin in 1989, a young East German man becomes concerned that when she wakes up, the excitement of the fall of the Berlin Wall may be too much for her. So eight months later, as she is returning home from the hospital, he sets about recreating the era of Communist era East Germany in the area around her apartment, but with everyone being so caught up in their new-found democracy, the illusion of depressing Iron Curtain malaise is difficult to maintain.

Die Wilden Kerle(2003) Flotter Fussball Abendteuerfilm mit cooler Musik. Purchased in Germany. Kundenbewertung: Average rating of 5/5 Average rating of 5/5 Average rating of 5/5 Average rating of 5/5

Sonnenallee(1999)
A group of kids grow up on the short, wrong (east) side of the Sonnenallee in Berlin, right next to one of the few border crossings between East and West reserved for German citizens. The antics of these kids, their families, of the "West German" friends and relatives who come to visit, and of the East German border guards, all serve to illustrate the absurdity of everyday life on the Sonnenallee, and therefore throughout the former East Germany.

Mãnner (1985)

Love me, love my double standards, that's what Julius (Lauterbach), a power hungry packaging magnate and habitual seducer of secretaries, expects from his wife. He gets it too, until their 12th anniversary, when a love bite on her neck suggests that an equaliser is at work. At this early point in Doris Dörrie's concise and sharply observed satire, you might be forgiven for thinking that a feminist attack is under way. Not so. Julius, who hasn't come to own a Maserati simply by waiting for things to happen, takes leave of absence to strike back. Concealing his identity, he persuades his wife's lover (Ochsenknecht) to accept him, first as a lodger in his squalid bachelor apartment, then as a partner in his low-achieving hippy life. It's the start of an unpredictable friendship that puts both men's motivation under the microscope. The screenplay requires a certain suspension of disbelief - would a wife be so easily deceived by a gorilla suit? - but she turns the tables neatly so that each gets his just deserts. Hers not to stick in the knife, rather to entertain with insight and mirth.

The Princess and the Warrior(Der Krieger und die Kaiserin) (2000)

Das Boot(1982) Film Arobics  Academy award nominee, Applause Learning  Resources
http://www.cosmopolis.ch/cosmo16/dasboot.htm
In the midst of World War II, as the tide turns against the Axis, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jürgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.

Widely considered to be director Wolfgang Petersen's best film and one of the finest German films ever made, DAS BOOT is stunningly realistic in its portrayal of the cramped conditions aboard a German submarine. Based on a novel by Lothar G. Buchheim, it is a striking example of an intelligent antiwar film clothed in the guise of a military thriller.

Der Bulle und das Mãdchen(1984
)  Purchased in Germany. One of the best thrillers of the 1980’s. Juergen Prochnow of Das Boot is  the star. The 'Bulle' is a real tough cop. Wanting his stuff back the 'Bulle' follows the girl to the frontier of Holland where she gets caught by Dutch policemen. Die Comedian Harmonists (1998)Hollywood Video, Film Arobics, Hollywood Video, Applause Learning  Resources Berlin in 1928: Young actor and musician Harry Frommermann has the idea of creating a German version of the American a-cappella band "The Revellers". He then publishes an advertisement in a newspaper and soon has formed a group out of singers Robert Biberti, Erich Collin, Ari Leschnikoff and Roman Cyckowski as well as pianist Erwin Bootz. After a long time of rehearsing and failures "The Comedian Harmonists", as the group calls her, achieve a huge popularity, success and wealth in Germany as well as Europe and even the United States. The group's trademark are not only brilliant singing performances, it's mostly their talent to imitate music instruments so that the audience gets the impression of listening to a whole orchestra playing while indeed the only real instrument is the piano. However, after years of immense success first problems appear with the beginning of the Nazi period, because three of the group's members are Jews and so soon are forbidden to perform in public. The movie portrays the rising of stars, the sparkling side but also the shadows of their success and finally their fall, being destroyed by politics and a mad government. Very entertaining, very moving and brilliantly acted.

(some pot smoking, no nudity, some bad language) purchased at Hollywood Video

“What to do in case of Fire” (Was tun, wenn's brennt?) (2001) - What To Do In Case of Fire? tells the humorous and touching story of six former creative anarchists who lived as house squatters in Berlin during its heyday in the 80s when Berlin was still an island in the middle of the former eastern Germany. At the end of the 80s they went their separate ways with the exception of Tim and Hotte, who have remained true to their ideals and continue to fight the issues they did as a group. In 2000, with Berlin as Germany's new capital, an event happens forcing the group out of existential reason to reunite and, ultimately, come to grips with the reason they separated 12 years ago.

Alles auf Zucker! Germany 2004  Opening 6 Jan 2005
Directed by: Dani Levy    Writing credits: Holger Franke, Dani Levy
Principal actors: Henry Hübchen, Hannelore Elsner, Udo Samel, Golda Tencer, Steffen Groth

Jaeckie Zucker (Henry Hübchen) is a gambler in trouble. His wife (Hannelore Elsner, who you probably know from German TV) has threatened to divorce him and, if he cannot soon find a way to pay off his gambling debts, he is off to jail. The last chance for the ex-East German sports reporter is his mother's inheritance. However, there's a hitch! In order to inherit her money, there is a stipulation in the will that Jaeckie has to make up with his estranged brother Samuel (Udo Samel), an orthodox Jew from Frankfurt. When Samuel and his family show up in Berlin to sit shiva (observe the mourning period) with Jaeckie's family, we have two dysfunctional families with two different "cultures" in one household. The director, Dani Levy, provides lots of laughs, but, beware: the pace of the movie is really hectic. (Thelma Freedman)

The movie was co-funded by the television channels Arte and the WDR . It is one of the very few movies about German Judaism that does not have the Shoah in the centre, but is a comedy about the crazy twists and turns of fate that befall a family that finds itself again. The two Jewish families are more symbolic of the current problems and past tragedies of the division of Germany between East and West, and how the country and its people are struggling to find to each other again. This division affected every German, regardless of their religion. The film depicts in a comic manner the divisions within Judaism between a secularised Jew from the former GDR who has to reconcile himself with his Orthodox brother from the West.

The movie was critically acclaimed in Germany and won a number of awards, most notably the 2005 Deutscher Filmpreis

The last three weeks of school life have begun: After the Abitur, Germany's leaving certificate, the friends and schoolmates of Gymnasium Kerkheim (Kerkheim High) will not see each other again so soon. It is a hard time for Markus and his girl Sandra from a lower grade, as he wants to hang out with his old friends, whereas she wants him to be there for her. It's an even harder time for Dirk, who is to be expelled from school if he fails the math exam that is coming up around midday, and it is the hardest time for Michael, who is a perfect pupil, but has no fun in life at all - and doesn't even know it yet. When Steven calls out a party to celebrate his letter of exemption from the army, they all get together for one of the last real cool events ever

Werner, Beinhart!!(2000) A great comedy cartoon. The soccer scene at the market is amazing!! Purchased in Germany Since the film is divided in animated and real sequences with a tremendous difference in quality, it is very hard to cast a vote that covers both. The animated part is hilarious (especially the football-match) and deserves definitely 8/10 if not better. A must see!. My recommendation is: get it on DVD or Video and skip anything that is not animation. Top of Form
Werner is a cult-hero among young Germans; he is the opposite of the dutiful, work-oriented model usually promulgated to them. Intead, he roars swiftly through the city on his highly customized motorcycle, cleverly outwitting the traffic policemen whose paths he crosses, while he picks up yet another in an endless series of cases of beer. He has no visible means of support, is as articulate as a stone, and seems to spend his days in a perpetual party. This Animal House-like comedy combines live action and animation. The story takes place on the north coast of Germany, and much of the dialog is in an obscure local dialect. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Europa, Europa(1990) True story of a Jewish boy who pretends to be German in the middle of Nazi Germany. 2 hours A Jewish boy separated from his family in the early days of WWII poses as a German orphan and is taken into the heart of the Nazi world as a 'war hero' and eventually becomes a Hitler Youth. Although improbabilities and happenstance are cornerstones of the film, it is based upon a true story.

Plot Summary for
One, Two, Three (G)(
1961)

Berlin, after the Second World War: C.R. MacNamara presides over the Coca-Cola branch of Germany. He is working hard and trying his very best to impress the Atlanta headquarters, since he has heard that the European headquarters in London will soon be looking for a new head. Now, Coca-Cola boss Mr. Hazeltine asks MacNamara to take care of his daughter Scarlett, who is going to take a trip to Europe. Scarlett, however, does not behave the way a young respectable girl of her age should: Instead of sightseeing, she goes out until the early morning and has lots of fun. Finally, she falls in love with Otto Piffl, a young man from East Berlin and a flaming Communist, and marries him surprisingly. When MacNamara hears of this, he intrigues quite a bit with the help of his assistant Schlemmer to get Piffl into an East German prison, but when he also gets note of his Boss and wife coming over to visit their daughter in Berlin, he needs to get Piffl out again, convert him to Capitalism and present him as a fine young and noble husband in order to get his London post, and all of that very quick!
