Internet Exercises Wetter Project
German I
April, 2002
Log on to your computer and click the Netscape Communicator icon on your desktop (it looks like a lighthouse). In the “Location” box at the top of your screen, type in the following URL to go to www.yahoo.de
1. Click on the Link “Nachrichten & Medien” then choose “Wetter”. Now you should have a whole host of subtopics. We are interested in taking an early April ski trip to Germany to enjoy the last of the sking season. So what we want to know, is what places in Germany still have some snow. Choose the link “Schneehoehe”. Hoehe means “height” , so “Schneehoehe” means? ________________________
After you have clicked “Schneehoehe”, choose the link “Schneeberichte [DWD]”. Knowing that “Wetterbericht” is weather report, what might “Schneebericht mean? What about “Bericht”? ________________________________________
2. After clicking “Schneeberichte [DWD]” what is the internet address that you are now at? _________________________________________________________________
3. You should be looking at a map of Germany that runs from mid-section of the country to the South (this is the region that has skiable mountains). Where there are names marked are areas where there are ski runs. Click on “Bayerische Alpen” (Bavarian Alps). How much snow (not new snow) in centimeters is lying on the slopes of the “Wendelstein” at this time? _____________________________________________
4. To the left of the map are four button keys for various countries “Deutschland”, “Schweiz”, Oesterreich” und “Frankreich”. What are the English names for these countries? ___________________________________________________________________________
5. Choose “Schweiz”. This information table is a little bit different. It gives the snow for a particular location for the “Tal” (valley) and “Berg” (mountaintop). How thick is the snow for the “Tal” and “Berg” in St. Moritz-Cerina at the present time? _____________________________________________________
6. Go back to www.yahoo.de, choose “Nachrichten und Medien” then “Wetter” once more. Choose this time “Wetterberichte – und vorhersagen” (Weather reports and predictions) Choose the “Wetter.net” link. At the “Wetter.net” sight, scroll down, you will find a search engine for city names. Type in Berlin and click. You will get a screen that contains a five day forecast for Berlin starting with today. For today: Is the weather sonnig oder wolkig? What word is used on this site for sonnig? What is the chance of rain? What is the day and night temperature (Celsius)? What is the wind’s direction and speed? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
7. Click on the button below the current day data, that is for the day four days in the future. Write down whether wolkig oder sonnig? What the chance for rain is? The day and night temperatures? And the wind’s direction and speed? ___________________________________________________________________
(Niederschlag-percipitation, Wahrscheinlichkeit – probability, Menge – amount)
Go to yahoo.de where the Wetter24 link is located. This time choose the Allewetter link.
